Mostly Mutts Month a Success!
For Immediate Release-
Mostly Mutts Month a Success!
August 2008 was Mostly Mutts Month at The Purrfect Nanny
The Purrfect Nanny, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters Business of the Year for 2008, declared August 2008 the first annual "Mostly Mutts Month!" During the month of August The Purrfect Nanny donated $1 for every pet sitting including daily dog walks, overnight sittings, and vacation sittings.
On Saturday September 20th, The Purrfect Nanny CEO, Beate Spear, presented Paige O’Neill, president of Mostly Mutts with a check for $442.
“There is no way we could have achieved this without the help and support of our clients and of course our wonderful Nannies. We would really like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this happen,” said Beate during the presentation.
As this first event was such a success, The Purrfect Nanny plans to continue holding Mostly Mutts Month each summer. As our business continues to grow, we hope to be able to donate more and more to Mostly Mutts.
Who is Mostly Mutts?
The mission of Mostly Mutts is to work closely with animal control officers and other rescue organizations to reduce the number of animals euthanized at local shelters. Mostly Mutts will provide housing, health care, training, physical, and emotional care to adoptable animals until they find a new home. Mostly Mutts is at the forefront of educating potential pet owners that the decision to add a furry family member is not one to be taken lightly. With limited funds, limited staff, limited support from the community, and no support from the government, Mostly Mutts still saves hundreds of pets every year.
Why Mostly Mutts?
“Our hearts go out to Paige and her staff, and we have always wanted to do more,” said Beate. In an effort to increase support for Mostly Mutts, The Purrfect Nanny decided to dedicate one month a year to Mostly Mutts. As their support can only go so far, they ask that you also support Mostly Mutts and other pet-related charities. “When we support local charities we can see the effect immediately in the communities where we live, work, and play.” Support does not always equal money; even a few hours of work can go far.
The giving doesn’t have to stop here. The Purrfect Nanny encourages everyone to continue to donate to this worthy cause throughout the year. You can make a donation by logging on to the Mostly Mutts Website at http://www.mostlymutts.org and clicking on the donation button.

Dog Walking in Atlanta with Atlanta's Premier Pet Sitting Company
According to the National News, your four-legged friends might look "cute and cuddly" when they're a bit on the chubby side the truth is that they in danger of the same health problems that plague obese people. We at The Purrfect Nanny try to help you prevent your pets from those dangers by offering dog walking services all over the Metropolitan Atlanta.
From diabetes to a great increase in heart and respiratory problems, our pets are at a great health risk the bigger they get. And while excess weight does not cause orthopedic problems it can worsen such things arthritis and hip dysphasia. Obese dogs also are more vulnerable to torn knee ligaments, skin infections, heatstroke and a host of other ailments.
Why are pets packing on the pounds? The same reasons people do: a sedentary lifestyle and too much food. But unlike people, pets don't choose how they live. Their access to food and exercise is almost entirely controlled by their owners.
A dog or cat will eat whatever you give it, so owner compliance is crucial for a weight management program. Diet alone will not a fit pet make. Exercise is just as important. A lot of our pets are couch potatoes. They're left at home with nothing to do during the day, so they sleep. Atlanta has several great dog parks, along with city and state parks to exercise your dogs in order to rid your dogs off their excess pounds.
It's also important to never give a pet table food. Our food is much higher in fat than commercial pet food is. It can lead to heavy tartar buildup on the teeth, and too much fat can cause pancreatitis. Many vets struggle to convince owners that they may be loving their pets to death. Please make sure you feed your pets the "right" diet. If you need more information, call upon The Purrfect Nanny or visit one of Atlanta's holistic veterinarians.
Pet owners of Atlanta, show your dog or cat some love. Be sure to feed them a sensible diet and offer them as many opportunities to be active. If you can't take your dog for a walk every day then consider pet walking or day care services a few times a week. Not only will your buddy feel better, he'll have a lot of fun and that can help you rest a little better.
We want to help Atlanta's pet lovers. Exclusively for our dog friends in Greater Atlanta we offer daily dog walks and nutrition counseling for your pets.
Our services are now available at our new Atlanta locations Atlantic Station and Buckhead.
We are just a dog walk away,

As Time Goes By...
It is hard to believe that already two years have passed since we founded our pet sitting service for the Metro Atlanta area. Never would we have imagined meeting so many great clients and their pets. Beyond any doubt we have experienced that Atlanta’s pet owners are truly dedicated to their furry, feathered and scaled friends. We know that for the majority of Atlanta’s pet owners the pet comes first. Hopefully we had been able to make a difference in their lives.
Two years is not long in the large scale of time but we have achieved so much in these two years and we are going stronger than ever.
As with the seasons, change is inevitable. Some of our clients have moved away from the Greater Atlanta area, some of our client’s pets have passed away; others simply don’t need our services at this time or not anymore. However, we truly enjoyed taking care of every single one of those pets.
There have been also changes with our team members. We met many great people and had the pleasure working with them. Some of those folks had to move on for similar reasons than some of our clients. We lost two sitters simply because they had to go and care for their elderly parent outside of Atlanta, two other sitters had become proud moms and decided to stay at home with their little ones and then there are the ones who just were heading to a different path of life.
We are having a very dedicated pet sitting team at this time and we make sure to keep it this way.

Equine Herpes Virus Found in Several Horses in Florida
Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin is alerting Georgians that equine herpes virus has been detected in Florida resulting in cancellation of two horse shows and quarantine.
The cases in Florida have been linked to a single horse imported from Europe. The horse was then shipped to Florida where it became ill with the virus.
Florida agriculture officials have reported five cases caused by Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) resulting in restricted movement of horses from the affected premises. The virus can usually be detected by a veterinary diagnostic laboratory through simple sample collections.
Equine Herpes Virus type 1 (EHV) causes the disease commonly known as Rhinopneumonitis and is present throughout the country. There are many vaccines available against EHV.
Clinical signs caused by EHV may include fever, nasal discharge, neurological symptoms, and/or abortion.
'Although Georgia has no reported EHV cases, the virus has the potential of presenting itself where horses congregate,' says Irvin. 'Equine Herpes Virus is contagious and horse owners are urged to ask their veterinarian about vaccination recommendations.'
Three deaths and 15 clinical cases have been attributed to the disease in Florida's current outbreak. Six cases have neurological symptoms. Horses from suspected stables in Florida are being monitored for fever and other clinical signs until state animal health authorities have determined the virus is under control.
'Experts recommend that people keep their horses at least 40-feet away from horses with unknown medical histories,' Irvin says.
Equine Herpes Virus can cause a serious respiratory disease that spreads through the air but generally requires direct or close contact between horses. Horses with clinical signs should be isolated and sick horses should be examined by a veterinarian for the proper diagnosis and treatment.
Laboratory confirmed cases of Equine Herpes Virus (Equine Rhinopneumonitis Type 1 and 4) are required to be reported to the Georgia Department of Agriculture (404) 656-3667 or 1-800-282-5852 or the USDA Area Veterinarian in Charge at (770) 922-7860.

Lucky Girl
On a sunny October afternoon, as my daughter and I were riding down Ragsdale Road in Acworth, we nearly ran over a large breed puppy. It jumped from the street into the edge of the woods right off of Lake Acworth and went hiding under a tree, shivering and scared to death. There were no people around but us, so obviously the puppy either escaped from home or had been dropped off. We did everything to find out if she belonged to one of the families surrounding the lake, but no one had a missing dog. We took her to our vet at Butler Creek Animal Hospital the next day and we were told that she was only 3 months old. The staff there helped us out with a lot of puppy formula and flea prevention and referred us to the rescue organization Mostly Mutts in order to help find a permanent home for the unfortunate puppy. Meanwhile, my daughter's teacher, Laura took Lucky (we thought that was an apt name) to foster until a permanent home was found. With help from Paige of Mostly Mutts and Laura, we got her spayed, vetted, micro chipped and yes, a nice family to take her home. The long journey of strangers has ended for Lucky Girl, who is now proudly responding to the name Princess.

The Purrfect Nanny Supports PAWS
When we first heard from Saddle Up Cobb's President Leah Urben about PAWS Atlanta's efforts to raise funds for the horses and cattle suffering in Louisiana we instantly contacted Hilary Smith, the girl in charge. We told her that we were sharing a table with Rich Casanova from Coffee News at the Healthy Taste of Acworth Expo and that we would like to have a donation box there. We successfully raised $100 in just a couple of hours.
A big thank you to everyone who helped to make that happen!
