How we chose our dog
10 Dec 2008
By now, almost everyone knows that President Elect Barack Obama and his family will be welcoming a new member to their family as they enter the White House. Much has been made about which breed or non breed they might choose and that Malia, the ten year old Obama daughter, has animal allergies which may limit breeds which might be suitable for their family.
Our own family faced similar limitations when we decided to add a furry member to our household. Our daughter had expressed her desire for a dog since she began speaking, but her severe allergies really made it seem like an impossibility. One day, about five years ago, we read an article on “hypo-allergenic” dog breeds. Some people like to label these “Designer Dogs”, but for anyone who suffers from severe allergies they are much more a necessity than a luxury. Of course it sparked our attention and we fell in love with the idea of a standard poodle retriever mix. We spent over a year researching “Doodles” to make sure they were the right dogs for our family. In our search, we found wonderful online communities of doodle owners ready and willing to share the great and not so great aspects of their dogs. In getting to know this breed and the folks with first hand experience with them, we came to know that if we were to get a dog, it would be a Doodle.
More tomorrow on our search for the perfect dog!
