A life with pets

Being the owner and family of an animal has difficult moments. Not everyone can handle the stress, but often our critters can suprise us in amazing ways. Not only can they warm our hearts, but they can give us a good laugh.
Pick this morning, for an example. With a migraine and a sore throat, I had no choice but to stay home. After taking medicine and preparing tea, I set about the task of feeding six hungry pets, two of them having already gathered. I assumed it would be a standard day, but they suprised me.

I decided to prepare dog food, first. As soon as they heard the can opener, our Dalmation, Scarlette, and Jack Russel Terrior, Chico, came running. Scarlette assumed the position of whining so loud I could have sworn the neighbors heard her. Chico pattered into the kitchen a few times only to be scolded out each time.
Our cat Starbuck discovered the dog food and attempted to steal it multiple times. I was forced to prepare food for him and Gaia, our other cat first. As they left the premesis, I gave food to the dogs. As I pulled up from putting a used fork in the dishwasher, Scarlette zoomed away from the food bowls and upstairs again. As usual, it took her only ten seconds to eat her food.
I fed the fish, who furiously attempted to swim against the filter water current to retrieve his pellets. After watching him for a moment, bemused, I refilled Polly the Parrot’s food only to have my fingers snapped at each time I tried to open the food latch.
That having been finished, I turned around to discover the cats had left their food untouched and were now busy devouring some unknown substance on the living room floor which they, of course, swallowed before I could pry it from their mouths.
Later I went into the bathroom, attempting to smooth my hair down. As soon as the door closed, paws scraped at the door, begging me to let two cats in with me. As soon as I did, they wandered aimlesssly around the sink instead of using the litter box. Gaia even complained to be let back out.
When I went upstairs I found a Gaia dabbing her paws in a glass of water and lapping at it with Starbuck wrapped up in one of my socks, chewing on it. The dogs were out of sight, but I could hear Polly cheerfully tootling away downstairs. I checked on her, only to discover that the cats [who’d dissapeared yet again] were wiggling their paws through the cage while Polly ran around with a toilet paper roll on her head.
That ended most of the morning fun, but I know I’ll find the pets doing something catastrophic soon. I must say that they add alot of comic relief to my day. For that, I thank them.
